How To Have More Of What The World Cup Gave South Africa
Much has been said about a potential “football hangover”, a feeling of depression caused by a sudden lack of a reason to wear orange wigs or to blame Uruguay for everything including the cold weather. The best cure for depression (and hangovers) is a good chuckle, so here’s my favourite parody video of the World Cup. It’s a lovely send up using the premise of the movie,“District 9”.
What did the world cup facilitate
in South Africa and how can we have more?
It didn’t just give us infrastructure and good publicity; it gave us
the opportunity to play as a nation. Play is now understood by scientists as
being one of the most important elements of a fulfilled human being. Together we had fun, laughed, cheered and wept.
We danced, played vuvuzelas, dreamed, lost and survived. And it was accessible
to all of us, except some ESKOM clients and airline passengers.
Why is this so important?
Play is not the opposite of work,
rather the opposite of depression and stagnation.
Play is critical to developing and
sustaining social relationships. We experience and act out our highs and lows
together, in a safe way. This is crucial for our emotional intelligence and social
cohesion.
Without play, our nation gets very
down on itself, hears and sees so much negativity, loses self-belief.We all dread losing the joy and returning to
“real life” problems.
But there is a solution...
