HUMOR BLOG: Comedy Trek. How do you get live comedy to come to wherever you live in South Africa?

The KZN Midlands is a beautiful area. Driving there in a tiny car full of comedians with a giant sound system strapped to the roof-rack is … more challenging. But the jokes and conversation on board were first class. We filmed bits for this website and we’ll post them soon.

The sight of my plucky, patently overloaded hatchback zipping along the highway seemed to infuriate big okes in giant SUV’s who struggled to overtake. Not that we were hogging the road, they just needed extra lanes for their ego. Testosterone and a GP number plate demanded a duel for road space, but the N3 is a place of desperate souls, so we just let them by. We weren’t in a hurry, the purpose of the Comedy Trek is to enjoy South Africa. We stopped regularly and enjoyed unique sights like the sign in Harrismith advertising “Vars Gebak Plaasmelk” (Freshly baked farm milk?)

We sold out our very first show!

The venue was Horizons Gourmet near Rosetta, a theatre/restaurant owned by entertainment personalities Brendan Grealy and Annie Robinson-Grealy. They were fantastic hosts, providing us with excellent food, cosy accommodation and the world’s most enthusiastic, insomniac, very loud cockerel.

Next morning at breakfast, Annie mentioned to Brendan that he should do something to stop the chicken disturbing the guests...
“Okay, Annie, I will. Would you prefer a thigh or a drumstick.”
We all pardoned the cockerel. Being Joburg based, it hadn’t bothered us anyway. We just thought it was a car alarm.

I think the audience enjoyed the show very much. We certainly did. They stayed around for hours afterwards sharing great anecdotes about Rosetta and the Midlands and introducing us to a very more-ish Midlands Red. It was massive fun and the people who came to watch our comedy made it extra special. By the time we left, we were high on their hospitality. We were Rosetta-stoned.

See you later this week in Mossel Bay and Plett.
