Removing Taboos
Al Prodgers is another local funnyman who's done his fair share of time on the comedy circuit, both here and abroad. He's been halfway around the planet coaxing chortles, whether in Mauritius, Dubai, or all across the African continent. Fans will know that, unlike his hairline, his brisk and upbeat wit has not recede over the years.
Describing himself as a "professional fool", he says of his role in society, " I am afforded the opportunity to speak about highly charged issues and, through my own foolishness, remove the taboo around them."
Prodgers also strongly believes that the role of a comedian is not to get up on stage with a mouth out a well-worn sales pitch. Comedy, to him, is organic and reactive. "I speak about whatever seems most relevant or comes naturally on the night. I draw from my existing material, but also improvise depending on the vibe and people in the room,' he says, adding that his audience is "a participant in the show, not a passive consumer".
Rubbing shoulders with his North American counterparts, Prodgers was surprised to learn that international comedians are clued up on the local comedy festivals: "They were really eager to visit... It think comedy is just another reason why Cape Town is world famous".
